scr.im: Convert your email to a URL
Apr 14th, 2009 by Beth

The other day I wrote about a site that converts your email address into a graphic so spammers can’t sweep your site.

This tool, with the unfortunate name of scr.im, converts your email address into a simple URL, and people who want to write you have to pass a simple test to show they’re human. Kinda cool, pretty clever and, best of all, completely free.

StopForwarding.Us: Send a polite note to stop the forwarding madness
Mar 30th, 2009 by Beth

I’m not going to say who in my circle of friends and family is guilty, but SOME OF YOU drive me nuts! You forward emails about sick children who just want postcards, friendship poems with angels and hearts, political puffery from your favorite radicals and pictures of cute bunnies and kittens.

StopForwarding.Us is a free service that allows you to send a private, polite and anonymous note to the sender to let her know to think before forwarding. I actually like the bunnies and kittens, but the friendship poems with email angels? Ergh!

Here’s an excerpt from the letter:

Please do not forward chain letters, urban legends, potentially offensive jokes, videos or photos without being asked or first receiving permission.

If you find something that you want to pass on and you genuinely think the recipient will enjoy it then forward it to that person only (not in an email blast to all your friends and family) and include a personal note about why you enjoyed it and why you think they will too.

Nicely done, don’t you think? Please forward this link to everyone you know. (Just kidding).

Posterous: Can blogging get any easier?
Mar 16th, 2009 by Beth

This free tool falls smack dab into the “If Only I Had Known” category. It’s an instant “Beth Favorite.”

Posterous is the easiest blogging tool I’ve ever seen. You simply email post@posterous.com, and they post what you’ve emailed. You can then claim a site of your own and keep posting to it.

It even adds your pictures, videos, documents… anything you attach to the email.

I also hooked it up to post to my Twitter account, and I can make it work with WordPress as well.

I’m feeling a little dizzy with joy right now.

Posterous – The place to post everything. Just email us. Dead simple blog by email..

hidetext.net: Turn your email into a graphic
Mar 13th, 2009 by Beth

Spammers sweep websites to collect email addresses, so many people resort to formatting their contact info as something like:

bziesenis (at) avenuez (dot) net

Other clever people create graphics out of their text so they can’t be swept.

Ta dah! Hidetext.net does it for you! Just type in your email address or any other text, and Hidetext converts it to a graphic that you can download or drag and drop! Love it.

hidetext.net – become ungoogable – leave no traces – anonymous web browsing, free privacy service.

Privnote: Self-destructing email
Jan 26th, 2009 by Beth

I’m not exactly sure how this will help your business, but Privnote might come in handy one day. You enter a note, and the system creates a link. Send the link to the recipient. Once it’s read, the link self destructs, and your note goes with it.

This is a way to send an important message from work without leaving an electronic trail. And I love the “James Bond”-ness of the thing.

Privnote – Send notes that will self-destruct after being read.
